Pain Barriers – good or bad ?

 

A number of years ago I went on a health kick.  I lost 24 kgs by going to the gym religiously five days a week and running long distances.  I achieved lofty goals : ran two marathons, countless half marathons and hundred’s of kms in training.

Then, a few years ago I stopped.  Did little or no exercise.  Put on weight.  I’ve been wanting to get back into a health routine but find it difficult.  Not sure why.

The other day I went for a very short walk / run.  Around 2 kms.  Relative to my long distance running, 2 kms is nothing.  However, it was painful.  Difficult.

Reflecting on this situation, I realised that pain is basically our bodies telling us that we are doing something that we are not used to doing.   As I am no longer used to running, I used muscles that were not used to being pushed… but I KNOW that this is not a bad thing.  That the body adapts, grows, and gets better with this exercises (within reason).

The trick with pain is to know when it is good and when it is bad (ie, a broken bone).

Hence the question : What other areas of our lives do we experience PAIN but are unable to distinguish whether is it good or bad …  and just assume that all pain is bad ?

Relationships ?   Friction amongst our colleagues ?  Hard work ?   Lofty goals ?   To achieve the seemingly unachievable ?

I’m interested in hearing from people about their views on this topic.  About pushing yourself physically and emotionally past boundaries where you feel that you have grown, adapted, improved.  Somewhere in these conversations there will be nuggets of gold.
